Did you know Arkansas has lots of Elk? I had no idea before moving here a few years ago.
You can view the Elk from your car along Highway 43 and 21 in Boxley Valley near Ponca, Arkansas.
A herd of over 450 Elk lives along the Buffalo River. On our first trip, we did not see the Elk because we arrived in the middle of the day. We were able to view some deer and other wild animals. We learned that the best time for Elk viewing is in the early morning hours or just before the sun sets. So, this past weekend we arrived a little after 5:00 pm to view the Elk. We were not on Highway 43 five minutes before we saw several Elk. We counted about 20 of them. During the fall is the best time for viewing. These animals are large and beautiful. You can see from the picture below the line of cars viewing Elk in Arkansas. It is a great family adventure. We had lots of fun watching these amazing animals that God made.
There is an Elk Education Center in Ponca, Arkansas. The admission is free, and you can learn all about the wildlife in Arkansas including Elk and the Black Bear.
The drive to Ponca, Arkansas was beautiful! I tried to capture some of the rolling hills and landscapes. If you want to see Elk, this would be a good day trip for anyone who lives in Arkansas, Southern Missouri, or Western Oklahoma. Just an idea for you to spend time with your family exploring nature.
While in this area, eat at the Cliff House Inn. Read my post with pictures of the breathtaking views and delicious food.
