List Of The Best Things And Places In the South My Southern Favorites

I decided maybe I needed to give thanks to God for what I take for granted about living in the South.  

I hope you enjoy all these great southern places.  They are truly some of my favorite places.

You Do Not Have To Be From The South To Have Beautiful Places To Visit.

I recently could not get these words out of my mind “These are a Few of my Favorite Things!”  I decided maybe I needed to give thanks to God for what I take for granted about living in the South. These are my favorite things that make the South unique.   Maybe you can relate to me or maybe you would like to visit to find out more about the great southern states that I love so much.  My favorite things were discovered over the years from living in most of these southern states or visiting them many times.  I enjoy living in the South and I hope you enjoy this light-hearted list about why I am so very thankful.

I hope after reading this list; you will understand why I decided to be a Food & Travel Blogger.  A big part of growing closer together with your family is spending time together.   I have lots of great memories spending time with my family over the years at these beautiful Southern places and delicious restaurants I call the “Best Things About the South.”  

These are a Few of my Favorite Things About the South!

  • Springtime, with all the blooming Azaleas, that


    yards and gardens all over the South.

  • Bellingrath Gardens with its rainbow of colors.  

    The Azalea Trail Maids with their colorful antebellum dresses adorned with matching hats and umbrellas. They represent the wonderful city of Mobile.

  • Callaway Gardens at Christmas time.  I second their claim of Fantasy in Lights being “The Most Spectacular Holiday Light And Sound Show In The South.”
  • The colorful Hydrangea blooms which are the size of grapefruits.
  • The sweet as honey smell of blooms on the Magnolia trees, Camellia bushes, and Honey Suckle vines all over the South.
  • The ancient Southern Live Oak Trees with Spanish Moss covering the trees like a blanket.
  • And the excellent varieties of Crape Myrtle trees that paint the south pink, purple, white, peach, and many other colors all summer long.

These are a few of my favorite things!

  • The beautiful people with their slow, southern drawl accents from Alabama and Mississippi to the Carolinas and Georgia with the accents of Louisiana being uniquely their own.
  • The food of Louisiana with all its heart, soul, and flavors which inspired me to take my food to another level.
  • The numerous southern cooks that know how to put on an indescribably delicious southern spread to feed their families and friends.  All over the South, you can find these southern cooks that put their heart and soul into feeding their families.  My love of cooking comes from living in the South and witnessing these cooks and their dishes firsthand.
  • Some of my all time favorite foods include, fried chicken ( AQ Chicken, Gus Fried Chicken, Babe’s Chicken along with biscuits, cornbread, mac and cheese, fresh green beans, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, mashed potatoes, fried green tomatoes, fried catfish, hush puppies, and boiled seafood, BBQ that Memphis and Alabama (Jim & Nick’s) is famous for, but can be found all over the South, the carrot cake, chocolate cake, buttermilk pie, egg custard pie, chess pie, pralines, pound cake, and so much more that are included in spreads across the great South.
  • Most of these dishes are made with my favorite cookware, Cast-Iron.  
  •  Here are just a couple of My Favorite Southern Restaurants not to be missed when visiting the South.  There are lots more!
  1. Ms. Wilkes Boarding House in Savannah, GA.
  2. The Dillard House in North GA.
  3. Lambert’s Cafe in Foley, AL.
  4. The Lady and Sons in Savannah, GA 
  5. Louie and The Redhead Lady Mandeville, LA Also seen on Food Network with Guy Fieri.
  6. The Original Oyster House in Mobile, AL and Gulf Shores, AL
  7. The Camellia Grill in New Orleans, LA
  8. New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood
  9. Cafe Du Monte Beignet
  • All of this would not be complete without a tall glass of Sweet Iced Tea.

These are a few of my favorite things!

  • Summer time at the SNOW WHITE beaches with mountains of sand dunes and bountiful sunshine in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, Pensacola Beach, Destin, and all along the panhandle of Florida.
  • Catching Lightening Bugs on a warm summer night.
  • Walking bare-footed in the thick green carpet of grass in yards all over the South.
  • Wading in the ice-cold creeks and skipping rocks across the water in TN, AR, and Northern GA.
  • Rocking in rocking chairs on front porches while watching the stars shining so brightly.

These are a few of my favorite things!

  • The farm land all over the South with acres and acres of cotton that look like a field of snow, mile high corn, rice, catfish, soy beans, crawfish, strawberries that drip sweet juice down your mouth with every bite, watermelon, and sweet tasting sugar cane.
  • The bountiful pecan groves.
  • The sweet aroma that comes from fat plump peaches in the acres of orchards.
  • And acres and acres of delicious, sweet, tangy lemons, grapefruit, tangerines and oranges all over Florida.

These are a few of my favorite things!

  • Sports all across the South.
  • The cheers of friends and family at the Friday night high school football games.
  • The college rival football games of Alabama vs. Auburn, Georgia vs. Georgia Tech., Florida vs. Florida State, Mississippi State vs. Old Miss, LSU vs. Arkansas, where we can all compete but still be united.
  • The Super Bowl XLIV where Drew Brees lead the New Orleans Saints to a victory on the field and inspired everyone to Come Back Stronger.
  • Eating hot dogs on a hot summer day in Turner Field in Atlanta.
  • And the entertainment of NASCAR, do I need to say more?

These are a few of my favorite things!

These are a few of my favorite things!

  • The signs on the side of the road where people are selling things that represent the South like Hot Boiled Peanuts, or Hot Doughnuts Now, or Fresh Gulf Shrimp in Alabama, or Fresh Crawfish and Boudin in Louisiana.
  • The old Antebellum homes and Southern Plantations that have been so beautifully restored. Like:
  • The southern farm houses with wrap around porches that stretch for miles.
  • The rocking chairs that sit on front porches that tell us to sit down and take a load off. 
  • The huge Red Barns on farms that remind everyone that our hard-working farmers are taking care of us.
  • All the beautiful old church buildings that proudly display the only thing that matters, The Cross.

These are a few of my favorite things!

  • The music of the South like Country Music and the Grand Old Opry in Nashville.
  • The jazz music of New Orleans that fills the streets daily.
  • And all the fantastic songs

    written about the South.   Stars fell on Alabama, Rocky Top, Sweet Home Alabama, and 

    many many more.

These are a few of my favorite things.  I hope you get to experience some of my favorite things too.
